MTG Funerals is a Limpopo funeral director based in Thohoyandou, with branches across Limpopo and one in Johannesburg. It sells six burial plans, from R70 a month, and the plan terms say the benefits are funeral services only. No benefit is paid in cash.
This page sets out what MTG publishes, where its own pages disagree with each other, and what to ask before you sign. The pages we read name no insurer, so we explain how to ask who carries the risk. We are independent and do not sell cover.
Who MTG Funerals is
MTG Funerals is a Limpopo funeral director. Its main office is on Phunda Maria Road in Thohoyandou. Its branches are in Polokwane, Louis Trichardt, Sibasa, Giyani, Thavhani Mall and Johannesburg, and it says it has more than eight branches across Limpopo and Gauteng. It is not a national chain.
MTG describes itself as part of the Mami Group. Some of its plan terms appear only on an older Mami Group plan site, mmginsure.co.za, and the current MTG site does not repeat them.
The branch addresses and numbers are in the contact table above. If you are outside Limpopo and Johannesburg, phone first and ask whether MTG can collect and bury where you need.

Services, not cash: what that means for your family
MTG's plan terms say no benefit is paid in cash. MTG offers only services benefits. The services it lists are the funeral service, repatriation, storage, a radio announcement, a tent, chairs, programmes, a coffin, a hearse, graveside tents, coffin spray and a tombstone. The higher plans add toilets, family cars, grave building, airtime and a courtesy car. The Rand amounts in the plans table are the value of those services, not money paid to you.
The terms add that MTG will pay back 100% of the total benefit if, for any reason, it cannot conduct the funeral service.
That is very different from a cash payout, so ask before you sign:
- Can the benefit be used with a funeral director other than MTG? If not, you are tied to MTG for the funeral.
- What happens if your family wants a different burial place or a different type of service?
- If MTG cannot conduct the funeral, how long does the pay-back take, and to whom is it paid?
Terms and figures to confirm by phone
The current MTG site does not state a waiting period. An older Mami Group plan site does, and its terms are:
- A six full months waiting period for claims due to natural causes.
- No claim paid for suicidal death before one year of the policy being in force.
- A maximum entry age of 80 for a spouse.
- The policy lapses if premiums are not received for two consecutive months.
- Claims must be notified within six months of death.
We cannot tell you which set of terms applies to your policy, so ask MTG which one does, and get it in writing. The rules cap the waiting period for natural death at six months, and no waiting period may apply to death by accident.
MTG's own pages also disagree with each other in places. The child cover amounts differ between pages for some plans, and the Executive plan is shown at two different starting premiums. Its home page says claims are paid out within 12 hours, which does not sit easily with services-only benefits. Ask what that means for a real claim. Do not rely on a figure you cannot see in the policy schedule.
How to claim with MTG
We did not find a claims procedure or a list of claim documents on the MTG pages. When someone dies, phone the emergency line in the contact table and ask what MTG needs from you, and in what order.
Ask which documents it needs for a claim on your plan, whether a death certificate and IDs are enough, and how quickly the funeral can be arranged. Under the older plan terms, claims must be notified within six months of death, so do not wait.
Separately, a notice of death must be given to Home Affairs within 72 hours by a family member or a representative the family appoints. Our guide to how funeral cover payouts work explains what follows.
If a claim is declined, ask for the reason in writing. You can then complain to the National Financial Ombud, which is free to use. Phone 0860 800 900 or use nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/.
Ask who carries the risk
None of the MTG pages we read names an insurer or an insurer licence number. The plans are described as services benefits provided by MTG itself. A funeral plan that promises a benefit on death is a regulated product, and the regulators have said that some funeral parlours collect premiums without the required licences. So the question matters.
Before you sign, ask MTG in writing:
- Who carries the risk on this plan? Is it a licensed insurer, and what is its name?
- What is the FSP number of the company that sells and administers the plan?
- What is the name of the company on the policy schedule?
Then search for the FSP number on the FSCA register of authorised financial services providers and confirm that the name matches. The FSCA toll-free line is 0800 110 443. Check that any insurer appears on the Prudential Authority's list of licensed insurers. If MTG cannot answer, do not pay until it can.
Never pay a claim fee or send money to a new bank account because a caller asked you to. Phone the number on the official site and confirm first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the MTG Funerals contact number?
MTG lists 0861 05 11 05 for funeral services, (015) 962 4896/7 for funeral plans and 076 962 9025 as an emergency number. Branch numbers are in the contact table on this page. Confirm on its official site before you rely on them.
Where are the MTG Funerals branches?
MTG's main office is in Thohoyandou, Limpopo. It lists branches in Polokwane, Louis Trichardt, Sibasa, Giyani, Thavhani Mall and Johannesburg. The addresses are in the contact table on this page.
Does MTG Funerals pay cash?
No. MTG's plan terms say no benefit is paid in cash and that it offers only services benefits. If MTG cannot conduct the funeral, the terms say it will pay back 100% of the total benefit.
How much are the MTG burial plans?
MTG has six burial plans, Basic to Executive, from R70 a month. Principal member and spouse cover runs from R10,000 to R50,000, paid as services. The plans table on this page shows each one.
What is the MTG Funerals waiting period?
The current MTG site does not state one. An older Mami Group plan site states six full months for natural causes, and no claim for suicide before one year. Ask MTG which terms apply and get it in writing.
Who underwrites MTG Funerals plans?
The pages we read name no insurer. Ask MTG in writing who carries the risk and for the FSP number of the seller, then check them on the FSCA register before you pay.
Can I use an MTG plan with another funeral parlour?
The terms say the benefits are services provided by MTG, so ask whether they can be used elsewhere. If not, you are tied to MTG for the funeral.
How do I claim on an MTG plan?
MTG does not publish claim steps or documents on the pages we read. Phone the emergency line and ask what it needs. Under the older plan terms, claims must be notified within six months of death.
