Two Mountains now presents itself as Burial Services. It sells five burial funeral plans, from Tribute to Gold, where the benefit is a burial service for the policyholder, with a cash payout offered instead if circumstances require it. It has been part of the Old Mutual group since 2023.
This page explains the plans, who provides the cover, how to claim and what to ask before you join. We are independent and we do not sell cover. Confirm every detail with Two Mountains before you pay.
Who Two Mountains is
Two Mountains was founded in 1999 in Phalaborwa. Its website now calls the business Two Mountains Burial Services, and its plan pages are titled Burial Service Plans. It has been a member of the Old Mutual group since 2023.
The group provides burial services: collecting and transporting the deceased and arranging the funeral. It also sells cash burial packages to families without a plan. Its tombstones are installed by Two Mountains, and it offers catering equipment and home set-up packages as a substitute benefit.
Two Mountains says it works from its head office in Midrand and from locations in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Confirm that your area is served before you join.

What the plans provide
There are five plans: Tribute, African Pride, Copper, Silver and Gold. Each plan has a service value, and the plans table above lists that value, the premium and what the funeral includes, from the casket and hearse to family cars, tent, chairs, groceries and flowers on the higher plans.
The benefit is a burial service for policyholders only. Two Mountains says a cash payout can be offered instead if circumstances require it. Ask how the cash amount is worked out and in what situations it is offered, and get the answer in writing.
The Tribute plan is exclusively for SASSA clients. All plans list free repatriation for up to 600km within South Africa. Collection, doctor's fees, storage and admin are included.
Two Mountains does not state entry ages on its plan pages. Ask for the age limit for every person you want to add.

Who provides the cover and how the premium works
Two Mountains states that cover is provided by Two Mountains Underwriters. We could not confirm its licence number on the site, so check the name on the FSCA register before you sign. Burial services are provided by Two Mountains Burial Services. Ask for the insurer's name on your policy schedule.
The 24-hour line in the facts box, 0800 001 919, is listed on the Two Mountains site as the Old Mutual funeral assistance number for clients on an Old Mutual burial package. If you hold a Two Mountains plan, the claims line and WhatsApp number in the contact table are the ones to use.
Accidental death cover begins once the first premium is paid. The pages we checked do not state a general waiting period for natural death. Two Mountains does say that increasing your cover, for example from R30 000 to R40 000, triggers a six month waiting period on the additional amount. Ask for the natural death waiting period for your plan in writing before you pay.
If you miss one premium the policy goes into arrears but cover stays active. If you miss two premiums in a row the policy lapses and Two Mountains will not honour claims. You can pay by debit order, PERSAL stop order, SASSA grant deduction, Pay@ or card at a branch. No minimum income is required.
How to claim
Two Mountains says you can claim by visiting a branch, phoning the toll-free claims line, sending a WhatsApp message or emailing the claims address. All of these are in the contact table above. Customer Care runs from 08h00 to 17h00 on weekdays and 08h00 to 13h00 on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Pick-up and repatriation run 24 hours a day, so call as soon as the person dies.
The documents Two Mountains lists are:
- A certified copy of the death certificate.
- A copy of the deceased's ID.
- The claimant's ID.
- A fully completed claim form.
- The claimant's banking details.
- All copies of the DHA or BI-1663 form from Home Affairs.
- Any additional documents it may ask for, depending on the type of claim.
Two Mountains does not publish a payout timeframe on the pages we checked. Ask how long it takes to act once it has all your documents. South African rules require an insurer to decide a funeral claim within two business days of receiving every document it requires.
If a claim is declined
Ask Two Mountains for the reason in writing and the clause it relies on. Waiting periods, unpaid premiums and fraud are the usual reasons funeral claims are declined. A policy that has lapsed after two missed premiums is one reason to check your payment records first. South African rules also say a late premium paid inside the grace period should not defeat a valid claim.
If you cannot settle it with Two Mountains, complain to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. It is free. Phone 0860 800 900, email [email protected] or use the form on nfosa.co.za. Keep copies of every letter, message and receipt.
What to ask before you join
- Which plan is this, and exactly what does the funeral include? Ask for the list in writing.
- Who is the insurer named on my policy, and who provides the burial service?
- What is the natural death waiting period, and what happens if I raise my cover later?
- Who can I add, up to what age, and what does each person cost?
- When is the cash payout offered instead of the burial service, and how much is it?
- What happens if I miss a premium, and when does cover end?
- Which branch will handle the funeral, and can it work in the town where we will bury?
- Is every benefit I was told about written into my policy? Only rely on what is in writing.
