Old Mutual sells funeral cover through four plans on its funeral page: EasiPlus, Care Plus, Standard and Comprehensive+. The online EasiPlus plan covers R10 000 to R70 000 and starts from R39 a month for a person aged 19 or under buying R10 000 of individual cover. Every plan we checked has a six-month waiting period for natural death and suicide, and immediate cover for accidental death.
Old Mutual publishes several claims numbers, so this page tells you which to try first, what documents to gather and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and we do not sell cover. Confirm every detail with Old Mutual before you sign.
What Old Mutual offers
Old Mutual's funeral page lists four plans: EasiPlus, Care Plus, Standard and Comprehensive+. We could verify the terms of three of them, and they are in the table below. Ask Old Mutual for the Standard plan's terms in writing if it interests you.
- EasiPlus: the online plan. You can get a quote and buy on WhatsApp or online, and cover up to 15 members.
- Care Plus: starting cover of up to R50 000 for the individual, single adult family and family plans, and R30 000 for extended family.
- Comprehensive+: starting cover of up to R70 000, R50 000 on the parent plan and R30 000 for extended family.
Old Mutual's plan brochures say the Standard and EasiPlus plans need the policyholder to be employed full time and a South African citizen. Check this before you apply.

Extras and optional benefits
The plans in the table carry a premium holiday for up to six missed premiums. Care Plus and Comprehensive+ also have a money back guarantee during the waiting period and a terminal illness benefit after 10 years.
Old Mutual also lists optional benefits that cost extra: double accidental death cover, a paid-up benefit, a grocery benefit and an education benefit (12 monthly payouts each), and a terminal illness benefit. Ask which of these your plan offers and what they add to the premium.
Old Mutual's own pages disagree on whether EasiPlus cover rises each year, so ask whether your premium, your cover or both will increase.
Waiting periods and missed premiums
Every plan we checked has a six-month waiting period for natural death and suicide. Accidental death is covered immediately once the application is accepted. If a life dies during the waiting period, a money back guarantee refunds premiums for the uncovered portion.
You can miss up to six premiums using automatic and requested premium holidays before the plan is cancelled. If the plan lapses, the insured people are no longer covered. The law also says a funeral policy may not impose a waiting period longer than six months for natural death. You may cancel a new policy within 31 days of receiving the policy information, if no benefit has been paid or claimed.
How to claim from Old Mutual
Start a claim on the website, on WhatsApp (save 0860 933 333, send Hi and choose option 1), through the free USSD code 1206672#, or by email. Because Old Mutual's pages show three claims numbers, try 0860 933 333 first, then 0860 222 274, and confirm on oldmutual.co.za.
Old Mutual asks for:
- A fully completed Old Mutual Death Claim Form.
- A certified copy of the death certificate.
- The Notification of Death form (DHA1663, formerly BI1663).
- The Old Mutual Beneficiary Form.
- Certified copies of the ID or passport of the deceased and of each beneficiary (a birth certificate if younger than 18).
- Banking details: a signed, dated and stamped letter from your bank not older than three months.
- A Letter of Executorship or Authority, when the benefit is payable to the estate.
For an unnatural death, add the Declaration by Police form, and a Road Traffic Accident Report if a motor vehicle was involved.
Once the documents are complete and the claim is approved, Old Mutual aims to pay final expenses death benefits within 48 hours and other death claims within 15 working days.
If Old Mutual declines your claim
Old Mutual says a claim can be denied because of exclusions such as suicide, because of fraud, because of errors in the claim, or because of non-disclosure such as an incorrect age. ASISA, the industry body, says waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums are the main reasons across the industry. Ask Old Mutual for the reason in writing.
An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim for non-disclosure of information it did not specifically ask for before the policy started. If you disagree with the decision, take it to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. The service is free. You can lodge a complaint at nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/, call 0860 800 900, or email [email protected]. Trying Old Mutual first is sensible, but it is not a legal requirement. The Ombud can dismiss a complaint after three or more years.
Who Old Mutual suits
Old Mutual suits people who want to buy online or on WhatsApp, or who need to cover parents and in-laws to age 84. It offers several plan levels, so you can match cover to your budget.
It suits you less if the policyholder is older than 65, or older than 54 on some Comprehensive+ plans. Compare a written quote with other providers on our compare funeral cover page.
