Capitec funeral cover is underwritten by Capitec Life Limited, a licensed life insurer and part of the Capitec group. It pays up to R100 000 for you and your spouse, and you can cover up to 21 family members. Premiums start from R25 a month on the Capitec app, and the funeral benefit is doubled for accidental death from day one.

Capitec's earlier funeral co-operation agreement with Sanlam ended on 31 October 2024. This page explains the cover amounts, entry ages, waiting periods, how to claim and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and we do not sell cover.

What Capitec offers

Capitec Funeral Cover is one plan that you tailor to your family. The policyholder must take at least R5 000 for themselves, and cover for other people is set by their age:

  • You and your spouse: up to R100 000 each.
  • Children: R20 000 from newborn to age 5, R50 000 from 6 to 13 and R60 000 from 14 up.
  • Parents (26 to 85): R50 000 each.
  • Extended family: R20 000 for ages 0 to 5 and R50 000 for ages 6 to 85.

Capitec Life Limited is the insurer. Capitec's earlier arrangement with Sanlam ended on 31 October 2024. The table below shows entry ages and the benefits.

Extra benefits

Capitec lists a doubled benefit on accidental death from day one and a funeral support service. The service arranges transport of the deceased from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho or Mozambique to a funeral home in South Africa at no extra cost, including one night's accommodation for one relative. You can reach it on 0860 77 75 54.

Other benefits include a voluntary policy pause of up to 6 months, a newborn premium waiver for 6 months and a death premium waiver, where the other covered people stay covered for 6 months without premiums. Capitec also says there is no automatic annual premium increase. Note that there is no cover while a policy is paused.

Waiting periods

Capitec's 2024 policy agreement gives a 6-month waiting period for natural death for the policyholder. Its live page does not print the length, so confirm it in the app or at a branch. Accidental death has no waiting period, and the benefit is doubled from day one.

If you switch from another insurer, Capitec removes its waiting period where you have already served it, provided your previous policy was active within 31 days. Keep your old policy schedule to show them.

The law also says a funeral policy may not impose a waiting period longer than six months for natural death, and none may apply to accidental death. You may cancel a new policy within 31 days of receiving the policy information, if no benefit has been paid or claimed.

How to claim from Capitec

Lodge the claim at a branch, by email, on WhatsApp (067 418 9565) or through the 24-hour Client Care Centre on 0860 10 20 43. Capitec's pages give two claims email addresses, [email protected] and [email protected], so confirm which is current before you send anything. Capitec asks for:

  • A valid ID of the person logging the claim.
  • A valid ID of the beneficiary and their banking details.
  • The death certificate.
  • The DHA 1663 form (notification of death or stillbirth) or the DHA 1680 form (Death Report).
  • Any other documents needed to assess the claim.

For an accidental death, add a police report with the cause of death.

Capitec says death claims are paid within 24 hours if all required documents are provided. If a claim is approved, it is paid immediately into a Capitec account, and payouts to other banks may take longer to reflect.

If Capitec declines your claim

ASISA, the industry body, says the main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums. Ask Capitec for the reason in writing and check it against your policy.

An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim for non-disclosure of information it did not specifically ask for before the policy started. If you disagree, take it to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. The service is free. You can lodge a complaint at nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/, call 0860 800 900, or email [email protected]. Trying Capitec first is sensible, but it is not a legal requirement. The Ombud can dismiss a complaint after three or more years.

Who Capitec suits

Capitec suits people who already bank with Capitec and want to manage cover in the app, and families who want to insure up to 21 people on one policy. It also suits people who value a doubled accidental death benefit from day one.

It suits you less if the policyholder is older than 64, because the 2024 policy agreement gives the policyholder's entry age as 18 to 64. Compare a written quote with other providers on our compare funeral cover page.
