Sopema Funeral Services, the Soweto funeral parlour and funeral policy business founded in 1988, has traded as Legae Funeral Home since 17 May 2025. The old website, sopemafuneral.co.za, now redirects to legaefuneral.co.za.

Legae also says the family runs a separate business under the Sopema name at the Orlando branch. We found no official website, number or address for that one. This page explains the rebrand plainly, then sets out Legae's plans, contacts and claims process, and how to check who you are dealing with. We are independent and do not sell cover.

Sopema is now Legae: what changed

Sopema Funeral Services changed its trading name to Legae Funeral Home on 17 May 2025. The old domain, sopemafuneral.co.za, now redirects to legaefuneral.co.za, so a search for Sopema Funerals often lands on Legae's site.

Legae says that only the trading name changed. Its legal business name, Bontle Ke Botho Consulting, did not, and neither did its underwriter, Sanlam. The business was founded in Soweto in 1988 and says it services the whole of Soweto and surrounding areas.

If you already have a Sopema policy, ask Legae in writing to confirm that your policy and premiums carry on as before. On the claim form, the policy number is described as starting with SOP, and it is on your SMS receipt.

The separate Sopema business in Orlando

Legae says the family now runs two separate businesses. The Dube, Dlamini and North West branches continue as Legae Funeral Home. The Orlando branch is managed by family members under the Sopema name.

We could not find an official website, phone number or address for the Orlando business. Old third-party listings for Sopema may belong to that business or be out of date, so we did not use them. If you mean the Orlando branch, take care:

  • Ask which company will carry out the funeral and which one holds your policy.
  • Get the company name and the FSP number in writing before you pay anything.
  • Do not assume that a number from an old listing belongs to the business you want.

The contact details in the tables on this page are for Legae Funeral Home.

How the Legae burial plans work

Legae sells four burial packages, each named after the value of the package and the casket. Each package lists a hearse and two family cars, body removal and dressing, a lowering device, a tent with chairs, groceries, airtime, a grave fee and cash back. The plans table above shows the packages, premiums by age and the full list of benefits, so they are not repeated here.

Legae also sells rider benefits, which are top-ups for a courtesy car, catering, meat and a tombstone. Its home page advertises funeral cover from a low monthly amount, but it does not say which package or age band that price is for. Work from the premium table for the package you want.

The waiting periods for the funeral packages are not stated on the pages we read. Ask for the waiting period in writing. The rules cap the waiting period for natural death at six months, and no waiting period may apply to death by accident.

Premiums can be paid at Pay@ and EasyPay retail partners, by direct EFT or with a bank card. EasyPay only accepts the exact premium amount. A lapsed policy pays no benefit, so keep your receipts and pay on time.

How to claim with Legae

Legae has an online claims page and a claims email address, both in the contact table above. Its claim form list asks for:

  • The underwriter's claim form, downloaded, completed and uploaded
  • The certified death certificate
  • A certified copy of the ID of the main member or beneficiary
  • A certified copy of the ID of the deceased
  • The BI 1663 notice of death
  • The beneficiary's bank statement
  • The policy number

Legae says that if all the information is correct and the forms are uploaded in an acceptable format, you will receive the payout within 48 business hours. It pays into the bank account on the statement you submit, and notifies you by SMS when the claim is approved.

If a claim is declined, ask for the reason in writing. You can then complain to the National Financial Ombud, which is free to use. Phone 0860 800 900 or use nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/.

Check who you are paying: FSP number and company name

Legae says it is an authorised financial services provider, underwritten by Sanlam Developing Markets, under FSP number 46377. That is Legae's own statement, and we did not check it on the FSCA register, so please do it before you pay.

Our page on the top funeral parlours in South Africa has more on comparing parlours. Never pay a claim fee or send money to a new bank account because a caller asked you to.
