Momentum does not sell a standalone funeral plan under its own name. Its personal life insurance page lists life cover, disability cover, income protection, critical illness cover, bond protection and functional impairment cover, and no individual funeral cover. Individual funeral cover from the same group, Momentum Metropolitan Life Limited, is the Metropolitan Funeral Plan.
Some existing Momentum policies do carry a funeral benefit, and Momentum has a claims process for them. This page explains both routes. It uses only what Momentum and Metropolitan publish on their own websites, checked on 30 September 2026. We are independent and do not sell cover.
The short answer
If you searched for Momentum funeral cover to buy a new policy, you will not find one on Momentum's personal website. Its list of personal cover options has life cover and other benefits, but no funeral plan you can apply for.
The group's individual funeral plan is the Metropolitan Funeral Plan. Metropolitan and Momentum are both part of Momentum Metropolitan Life Limited, a licensed life insurer. The plan is sold under the Metropolitan name, not as Momentum Funeral Cover. Read our Metropolitan funeral cover review for the full picture.
If you already have a Momentum policy, check your policy schedule for a funeral benefit before you assume you have none.

Momentum funeral plans and prices
Plans as Momentum describes them on its own website on 30 September 2026. Premiums depend on your age, the cover amount and who you add, so the published figures are examples, not quotes.

The Metropolitan Funeral Plan in brief
Metropolitan says you can cover yourself and your immediate family for up to R100 000, and parents and extended family for up to R50 000. Cover starts at R5 000, and up to 20 people can be on one plan. It says cover starts from R40 a month.
Metropolitan lists these extras:
- CashBack of 12.5% of premiums after the first 24 months, then every 36 months.
- A Monthly Essentials benefit of up to R3 000 a month for 6 or 12 months.
- A memorial benefit of up to R20 000.
- Repatriation within South Africa.
- Payment protection, premium skips and value protection.
The waiting period and entry ages are not published in the plan overview we checked. Ask Metropolitan on 0860 724 724 before you apply. The R40 figure is a starting price, not what a family should expect to pay.
If you hold a Momentum policy with a funeral benefit
Some existing Momentum policies carry a funeral benefit, and Momentum's only funeral page is the claims page for these benefits. There is no individual funeral product behind it.
Momentum does not publish premiums, waiting periods or entry ages for a funeral benefit. What you get depends on the policy that carries it, so read your policy schedule or ask Momentum. Do not use the figures on this page as the terms of your policy.
If you are comparing this with a stand-alone plan, our guide to life insurance with funeral cover explains the difference.
Momentum contact numbers and how to claim

How to claim a Momentum funeral benefit
Send your documents to [email protected] or call 0860 441 111. The funeral claims and client service lines are open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, and closed on weekends and public holidays.
Momentum lists these documents:
- The death certificate (BI-5).
- The deceased's ID, or birth certificate if they were younger than 18.
- The notice of death or stillbirth (DHA-1663) from the doctor who declared the death.
- The funeral claim form CLAIM009, completed and signed by the claimant.
- The unnatural death form CLAIM003E, completed by the investigating police officer, if the death was from unnatural causes.
- The POPIA consent form CLAIM026.
- Proof of banking details in the claimant's name, not older than three months, on a bank letterhead or bank-stamped.
- Proof of the claimant's identity: a green bar-coded ID, smart ID card, valid driver's licence or valid passport.
A valid funeral benefit claim is paid to the beneficiary first. If there is no beneficiary, it goes to the policyholder if that is a different person, and then to the deceased estate if the insured and the policyholder are the same person.
Payout time and waiting periods
Momentum publishes no payout time for funeral benefits. Metropolitan says valid claims sent on WhatsApp to 0860 724 724 are paid within 4 hours, and claims by email, phone or branch can take up to 48 hours to process. That is Metropolitan's claim, and it applies to its own plan.
The regulator's rule is that an insurer must decide a funeral claim within two business days after it has every required document. Missing documents are the usual cause of delay.
Neither Momentum nor the Metropolitan overview publishes a waiting period. By law, a waiting period for a natural death cannot be longer than six months, and none may apply to an accidental death. Ask the insurer for your exact terms in writing.
If a claim is declined
Ask for the reason in writing. The main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums, according to the industry body ASISA. An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about before the policy started.
If you are still not satisfied, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free for the person complaining. The Ombud may dismiss a complaint if three years or more have passed since you knew, or should have known, that you had cause to complain, so do not wait.
