You must be 18 to 64 to join, and parents and extended family cannot be added. There is no pensioner plan. What Pep funeral cover is

The funeral plan sold at Pep is the Abacus Funeral Plan. Abacus Life Ltd is the insurer, and it is a licensed life insurer and an authorised financial services provider. Pep is the retailer where the plan is bought and where premiums can be paid. Pep does not underwrite it.

There are Individual, Family and Single Parent plans. Each is offered at three cover levels, R15 000, R25 000 and R35 000. On the Individual plan, the accidental death benefit is the same amount at no additional premium. The plans table below sets out the details.

Who can join, and who cannot

The policyholder and spouse must be 18 to 64 to join. The policyholder must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident or hold a valid work visa. The plan covers the policyholder, the spouse and children. Parents and extended family cannot be added.

There is no pensioner plan. If you are over 64, or you want cover for older parents, this is not the right plan. Look at funeral cover for pensioners, funeral cover over 65 and funeral cover for parents.

Waiting period and keeping cover active

For natural death the waiting period is 6 consecutive months or 6 consecutive monthly premium payments, whichever is later. Accidental death is covered during the waiting period, as long as premiums are paid on time and received by Abacus.

The policy lapses after the due date of the third unpaid premium, with no further notice, and no claims are paid while premiums are unpaid. South African rules also say an insurer must tell you within 15 days when a premium has not been paid, so ask Abacus how it will contact you. You can pay in cash at Pep and other participating stores, with a store card or by debit order. The policyholder must be the person who pays.

Our page on funeral cover with no waiting period explains what the rules allow.

How to claim

Call Abacus on 031 570 7631 or 0800 777 444 to register the claim, or email [email protected]. Abacus does not publish a list of claim documents. It says its team will guide you through the process and the documents required, so ask when you phone.

An older Abacus claims page says funeral policies may be paid out in 2 days once the claim form and all required documents are submitted. Treat that as a guide, and ask what applies to your policy. The rules say an insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all documents. On the death of the policyholder, the beneficiary also receives R1 000 a month for 3 months on top of the funeral benefit.

If Abacus declines a claim

Ask for the reason in writing. The usual causes are a claim inside the waiting period, unpaid premiums or missing documents. An insurer may not refuse a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about.

You can email [email protected]. If you are still unhappy, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free, and complaints can be dismissed after three years. See our guide to funeral cover scams and your rights.

Who it suits

It suits an adult under 65 who wants simple, low-cost cover for themselves, a spouse and children, and who is happy to pay in a store. The trade-offs are the modest cover amounts, the third missed premium lapse and the fact that no one older can be added.

Compare with Shoprite, Assupol and funeral cover for parents before you decide.
