Shoprite Funeral Cover

Shoprite sells the cover, but OUTsurance provides it. You buy at a Money Market counter, and the policy is OUTsurance funeral insurance underwritten by OUTsurance Life Insurance Company Limited. Shoprite says the service is powered by the Shoprite Group of Companies.

The Shoprite version is a smaller product than the main OUTsurance Funeral Plan. Its cover runs from R10 000 to R50 000. The main plan runs from R30 000 to R100 000 and is described on our OUTsurance funeral cover page, so do not mix the two up when you compare terms.

Plans as Shoprite describes them on its own website on 30 September 2026. Premiums depend on your age, the cover amount and who you add, so the published figures are examples, not quotes.

Checked on 30 September 2026 against Shoprite's official website. Numbers change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. Shoprite will never ask you to pay a claim fee or send money to a new bank account; if a caller does, hang up and phone the official number.

The pages we checked do not give the standard waiting period for new cover, the entry ages or a list of claim documents. They do say that switching from another registered insurer brings no additional waiting period for natural death, and that a pause of up to three months brings no new waiting period.

The two Shoprite-related pages also disagree on family size. OUTsurance says up to 21 family members, and the Money Market page says up to 13. Ask at the counter which applies, and get the answers on your policy schedule. South African rules cap a funeral waiting period at six months and do not allow one for accidental death. Accidental death is an optional extra on these pages. It is a separate accidental death policy that pays on top of the funeral cover, so it is not automatic. The two pages differ on how much it pays, so ask.

The OUTbonus returns one month's premium for every 12 premiums paid. Premiums can be paid by debit order or cash. On a valid claim you also get a R1000 Shoprite voucher.

Follow the claims details on your policy document. OUTsurance's claims centre is 08 600 70 000, and it is a company line, not one specific to the Shoprite product.

We could not read the Shoprite policy document, so we cannot list the documents or the deadline for claiming. Ask when you claim, and report the death as soon as you can. The rules say an insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all documents.

Ask for the reason in writing. The usual causes are a claim inside the waiting period, unpaid premiums or missing documents. An insurer may not refuse a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about.

It suits someone who wants modest, low-cost cover that can be bought and paid for in cash at a counter they already use. The trade-off is that much of the detail is not on the Shoprite pages, so you must ask for it.
