Absa funeral cover is sold under two plans, the Absa Flexi Funeral Plan and the Absa Eyenu Nonke Funeral Plan. Both are insured by Absa Life Limited. The Flexi plan covers you and your spouse for up to R100 000, and natural death has a 6 month waiting period that starts when Absa receives your first premium.
This page shows what each plan offers, who can join, what Absa asks for when you claim and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and do not sell cover. Absa does not publish a starting premium on its funeral pages, so get a quote before you decide.
The two Absa funeral plans
Absa Flexi Funeral Plan. This is the larger plan. It covers you and your spouse for up to R100 000, children for up to R50 000 each and extended family for up to R50 000 each. There is no medical examination. Extended family must be younger than 75.
Absa Eyenu Nonke Funeral Plan. This is a smaller, set-amount plan. You choose R15 000, R20 000 or R30 000, and family is covered for up to R20 000. You can choose Member Only, Family, or Full Family, and add up to 10 extended family members at an extra premium. Absa also lists a once-off grocery benefit and an airtime benefit on this plan.
Both plans are insured by Absa Life Limited, which is part of Absa Group. The tables below set out the details.

Absa funeral plans and prices
Plans as Absa describes them on its own website on 30 September 2026. Premiums depend on your age, the cover amount and who you add, so the published figures are examples, not quotes.
| Plan | Cover | Entry age | Waiting period | Published premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Absa Flexi Funeral Plan | Up to R100 000 for you and your spouse; up to R50 000 per child; up to R50 000 per extended family member. | Main member and spouse 18-70; children younger than 70; extended family younger than 75. | 6 months for natural death (or the remainder of the waiting period from the previous insurer); suicide or self-inflicted injury excluded in the first 12 months. The six months start when Absa receives your first premium. | The plan page publishes no premium. A 2023 Absa Life Community post says 'Cover for you and your spouse from R2.10 per day' and 'Cover for your children from R10 per month' (dated July 2023, edited September 2023). |
| Absa Eyenu Nonke Funeral Plan | Choose R15 000, R20 000 or R30 000 (family covered up to R20 000). Full Family (you, spouse, up to 5 children), Family (you and up to 5 children) or Member Only; up to 10 extended family members at additional premium. | Main member 18-65 | 6 months for natural death applies across Absa funeral plans (per the explore page's Waiting Period statement). | Quoted on application |
Extra benefits Absa lists:
- Absa Flexi Funeral Plan: Double Accidental Death benefit; benefits increase 3% every year; transport of mortal remains; premium relief; optional R10 000 unveiling benefit, R5 000 after-funeral benefit and grocery benefits for you and your spouse; no medical examination.
- Absa Eyenu Nonke Funeral Plan: Airtime benefit R200 and grocery benefit R5 000 (once-off, for all lives 18 or older); optional unveiling benefit; monthly cash back Rewards for qualifying Absa transactional customers (R15 to R50 a month depending on option and cover, three transactions a month required).

Waiting periods
The waiting period for natural death is 6 months. It starts when Absa receives your first premium. If your first premium is paid on 1 March, a natural death claim is possible after 1 September. Suicide is excluded in the first 12 months.
Accidental death is not subject to the natural-death waiting period, and South African rules do not allow a waiting period for accidental death. If you already served a waiting period with a previous insurer, Absa counts the remainder of it on the Flexi plan, so tell Absa about your old policy when you apply.
Our page on funeral cover with no waiting period explains what the rules allow.
Documents Absa asks for
Absa lists these for a funeral claim:
- a completed claim form
- the completed BI 1663 notification of death
- a certified copy of the death certificate
- a certified copy of the deceased's ID, and your own ID if you are not the main member
- a police report if the death was from unnatural causes
- proof of banking details, not older than three months, if the money goes into a bank other than Absa
- proof of residential address
- a letter of authority, with the policy number, where no beneficiary is noted
Documents can be certified free at an Absa branch, a police station or a commissioner of oaths. Absa does not publish a payout time on its claim page. The rules say the insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all the documents. Any premiums you missed are deducted at claim stage.
If Absa declines a claim
Ask Absa for the reason in writing. The usual causes are a claim inside the waiting period, unpaid premiums or missing documents. An insurer may not refuse a claim because you left out information it never asked for.
If you are still unhappy, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free. Trying Absa first is sensible but not a legal requirement, and complaints can be dismissed after three years. See our guide to funeral cover scams and your rights.
Who it suits
The Flexi plan suits an Absa customer who wants higher cover for a couple, with children and extended family added. Eyenu Nonke suits someone who wants a fixed, lower cover amount with grocery and airtime benefits and monthly cash back for qualifying Absa transactional customers.
Make sure you know which plan you are on, because the entry ages, cover and claims number differ. Compare with Nedbank, FNB and Standard Bank before you decide.
