Nedbank funeral cover is called MyCover Funeral and is underwritten by Nedgroup Life Assurance Company Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nedbank Group. Nedbank publishes R50 a month for R30,000 of individual cover and R90 a month for R30,000 of family cover. Natural death has a 6 month waiting period and accidental death has none.
This page covers the three MyCover Funeral options, who can join, what to send when you claim and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and do not sell cover. Confirm the current terms with Nedbank before you sign.
What MyCover Funeral offers
There are three ways to buy MyCover Funeral. Individual R30,000 covers you alone. Family Cover gives R30,000 for you and up to 6 family members. Build your own lets you choose your premium and your cover, up to R100,000, for up to 29 dependents.
Across all your funeral policies with Nedbank, the most you can insure per person is R100,000. The lowest cover for the main insured person is R5,000. You can apply online through the Money app or Online Banking, or ask Nedbank to call you back.

Who can join and waiting periods
The policyholder must be at least 18 and not older than 75. On Build your own, a spouse can also join from 18 to 75, and children must be 65 or younger to qualify.
Natural death has a 6 month waiting period from the day Nedbank receives your first premium. On Build your own, the 6 months applies to you, your immediate family and domestic workers. Other insured lives are covered after 12 months. Accidental death has no waiting period, when death happens within 90 days of the accident. Suicide or self-injury in the first 12 months is excluded.
Our page on funeral cover with no waiting period explains what the rules allow.
Cashback and other benefits
Family Cover and Build your own offer 20% cashback on all premiums paid over 3 years, if the policy does not lapse. Premiums are waived for up to 24 months after you pass away. Nedbank's Value for Life benefit gives free transport of the deceased's remains to the funeral home of your choice, and a R1 000 grocery voucher, if you use the service.
Build your own also lets you add monthly income for loved ones, and automatic yearly cover increases. Read the plan pages for the full list, because benefits differ by option. The plans table above sets them out.
How to claim step by step
Report the death to Nedbank within 180 days. If you report later, Nedbank does not have to pay. Call 0800 333 111, or email [email protected] for the documents, and hand them in at any branch. Nedbank also lists a second number, 0860 333 111, on an older blog, so use the first number and confirm on Nedbank's site.
Nedbank asks for these documents:
- the completed funeral claim form, or the reference number of your call
- the death certificate
- the BI-1663 or DHA-1663 notification of death
- the ID of the deceased, or a birth certificate if under 18
- a certified copy of the claimant's ID
- a burial order, or the funeral parlour invoice or receipt
- bank details, or a certified copy of a bank statement
- a police report only if the death was unnatural, and proof of relationship if asked
The policy wording says the lump sum is paid within 24 hours after Nedbank receives the documents it needs. The Family Cover page says within 12 hours. The rules say the insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all documents. Send everything at once to avoid delays.
If Nedbank declines a claim
Ask for the reason in writing. Common reasons are a claim inside the waiting period, a late report, unpaid premiums or missing documents. An insurer may not refuse a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about.
You can email [email protected]. If you are still unhappy, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. The service is free, and complaints can be dismissed after three years. See our guide to funeral cover scams and your rights.
Who it suits
MyCover Funeral suits Nedbank clients who want a fixed, low-cost plan, or who want to choose their own cover up to R100,000. The fixed plans are simple. Build your own gives more control but the premium is quoted on application.
Compare with Absa, FNB and Standard Bank before you decide.
