Standard Bank's funeral plan covers up to R100 000 per adult, with unlimited family members and no medical tests. The main member and spouse must be aged 18 to 65 at entry, and parents 18 to 84. Natural death has a 6-month waiting period, and accidental death has none. The claims helpline is 0860 123 999.
Standard Bank does not publish a starting premium, so you will only see a price on a quote. This page explains who underwrites the plan, the waiting periods, how to claim and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and we do not sell cover.

Who you can cover and up to what age
The main member and spouse must be aged 18 to 65 at entry. Parents and parents-in-law can be added from 18 to 84. Extended family can be covered from birth to 84, and children up to 21, or 25 if studying full-time.
Cover for children is capped by law and by the policy terms at R5 000, R20 000 or R50 000, depending on age. Ask Standard Bank which cap applies to each child on your quote.
Because Standard Bank publishes no starting price, get a written quote. Your premium depends on the cover amounts, the ages of the people covered and any optional benefits.
Waiting periods
The waiting period is 6 months for all benefits, except accidental death, which has none, and suicide, which has 12 months. If a covered person dies from natural causes during the waiting period, the premiums paid for that life are returned.
The law also says a funeral policy may not impose a waiting period longer than six months for natural death, and none may apply to accidental death. You may cancel a new policy within 31 days of receiving the policy information, if no benefit has been paid or claimed.
The optional cashback returns 10% of premiums paid every 5 years, whether or not you claim. It costs extra, so ask what it adds to the premium.
How to claim from Standard Bank
Call the Funeral Plan claims helpline on 0860 123 999. Submit the claim within 12 months of the death. Standard Bank asks for:
- A completed claims form.
- The death certificate.
- A certified copy of the deceased's identity document, or the birth certificate if there is no ID or a child under 18 died.
- The original identity document of each beneficiary.
- A marriage certificate or other proof of relationship with the main member.
- The notice of registration of death (Home Affairs form DHA1663-A).
- The beneficiaries' bank statement, if they are not Standard Bank customers.
- A letter of appointment or the executor's letter, if no beneficiary was nominated.
For a death by accident, add a copy of the police report.
Standard Bank says all approved claims are paid within 48 hours after it receives the claim with all the correct documents.
If Standard Bank declines your claim
ASISA, the industry body, says the main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums. Ask Standard Bank for the reason in writing and check it against your policy.
An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim for non-disclosure of information it did not specifically ask for before the policy started. If you disagree, take it to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. The service is free. You can lodge a complaint at nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/, call 0860 800 900, or email [email protected]. Trying Standard Bank first is sensible, but it is not a legal requirement. The Ombud can dismiss a complaint after three or more years.
Who Standard Bank suits
The plan suits people who already bank with Standard Bank and want to apply through the app, WhatsApp or cellphone banking. It also suits families who want to cover many relatives on one plan, including parents up to 84.
It suits you less if you want to see a price before you apply, or if you need the main member to enter after 65. Compare a written quote with other providers on our compare funeral cover page.
