What Liberty offers
Liberty's funeral cover is sold as one product, the Liberty Funeral Plus Plan. The insurer is Liberty Group Limited, part of the Standard Bank Group. It also sells life cover and other products, but this page covers only the funeral plan.
The plan pays a cash lump sum. You choose the cover amount for each person, and the premium depends on the amounts, the number of people and their ages.
Liberty says people who are not blood relatives, such as a domestic worker or gardener, can be covered as extended family. That is not true of every provider, so it is worth knowing if you support people outside your immediate family.

Cover amounts and who can join
On the Funeral Plus Plan you can insure:
| Person | Cover | Numbers and ages |
|---|---|---|
| Main member and spouse | R5 000 to R100 000 | Spouse up to 3; both 18 to 65 |
| Children | R5 000 to R50 000 | Up to 10, ages 0 to 24 |
| Parents | R5 000 to R80 000 | Up to 8, ages 18 to 84 |
| Extended family | R5 000 to R50 000 | Up to 10, ages 0 to 84 |
Up to 32 people can be on one policy. Liberty's brochure limits children under 6 to R20 000, so the web table and the brochure differ slightly for young children. Ask Liberty to confirm the amount for each child in writing.
The law limits funeral cover per life for each insurer, and it counts all policies with that insurer together. If you already have funeral cover with Liberty, ask how a new plan adds to it. For relatives beyond your household, see funeral cover for extended family.
Waiting periods and switching from another insurer
Liberty says natural death is covered after 6 months of payments. Unnatural causes, including accidents, have no waiting period. Suicide cover begins after 12 months. If a person dies of natural causes during the waiting period, the premiums are refunded.
The law caps the waiting period for a natural death at six months and allows none for an accidental death. It also says a new insurer may not impose a waiting period if you had a funeral policy with another insurer at least 31 days earlier, covering the same people, and you had finished that waiting period. Liberty says its own waiting period is waived when you switch from another insurer within 31 days and the previous waiting period was served. Have your old policy schedule ready.
Do not cancel your old policy until the new one is in force.
Premiums, cooling-off and optional extras
Liberty says premiums start from R40 a month. The figure carries an asterisk on its page, and the real price depends on the cover amount, the number of people and their ages. Ask for a quote for your family.
Premiums increase automatically, currently at 3%, to maintain your benefit. There is a 31-day cooling-off period. Under the regulator's rules you may cancel a new policy in that time if no benefit has been paid or claimed and no insured event has occurred.
Liberty lists optional extras at additional cost:
- Tombstone, R10 000 per insured person.
- Double Accident.
- Inkomo Cash, a R10 000 lump sum.
- Cash Back Bonus, which returns 10% of premiums every 5 years.
- Paid Up, with no premiums from age 65 and cover that remains for life.
- Value-added benefits such as groceries and transport.
A standard premium skip benefit lets you skip one monthly premium once a year, and you can accumulate up to 6. Check what each extra adds to the premium before you take it.

How to claim and how long it takes
Lodge a funeral claim on Liberty's digital claims form at liberty.co.za/how-to-claim, or call +27 860 456 789 or +27 11 558 4871. You can upload documents as you go and finish the claim later.
Liberty's public pages do not list the documents you need. The claim form shows them as you fill it in. Have the death certificate, the deceased's ID and the claimant's bank details ready, and ask Liberty to confirm the full list when you call.
Liberty commits to pay valid funeral claims within 48 hours of receiving all required documents. The regulator's rule is that an insurer must decide a funeral claim within two business days after it has every required document. Missing paperwork is the usual cause of delay. Our guide to how funeral cover payouts work explains each step.
If a Liberty claim is declined
Ask for the reason in writing. The main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums, according to the industry body ASISA. An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about before the policy started.
If you are not satisfied, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free for the person complaining. The Ombud may dismiss a complaint if three years or more have passed since you knew, or should have known, that you had cause to complain, so do not wait.
