OUTsurance funeral cover is the OUTsurance Funeral Plan, a cash payout on death underwritten by OUTsurance Life Insurance Company Limited. Cover runs from R30 000 to R100 000 and can be changed at any time. You can apply up to and including age 69, and natural death has a 6 month waiting period.

OUTsurance quotes each person individually and does not publish a premium range, so you need a quote. The claim deadline is short, at 3 months from the date of death. We are independent and do not sell cover. Confirm the current terms with OUTsurance before you sign.

What the OUTsurance Funeral Plan offers

The plan pays a cash lump sum when an insured person dies. You choose the cover amount from R30 000 to R100 000, and you can change it later. There is no lower option.

You can add a spouse, up to eight children, parents or parents-in-law and named extended family. Everyone covered must be a South African citizen who lives in South Africa at least 6 months in any 12.

OUTsurance sells directly, by phone and online. It quotes you as an individual, so there is no single price for a group of people. Ask for a quote for everyone you want to cover.

Waiting periods and changes to your cover

For natural or health-related death, the waiting period is 6 months and six premiums must have been paid. Accidental or unnatural death has no waiting period.

A new waiting period applies to people you add later and to any increase in cover, so ask OUTsurance how a change affects you before you make it. If you use the pause and play feature, cover restarts without new waiting periods when you resume.

Our page on funeral cover with no waiting period explains what the rules allow.

Extra benefits, and what is not offered

OUTsurance lists optional cash benefits of up to R5 000 each for transport, after tears, tombstone, catering and marquee. It also lists a stillborn benefit, a premium waiver and a repatriation benefit. Your policy schedule shows which extras you actually selected, so check it.

OUTsurance does not advertise a cash-back benefit on the funeral plan. If cash-back matters to you, see our page on cash back funeral cover.

How to claim, and the 3 month deadline

Start a claim in the OUTsurance app, in the client portal or by phoning 08 600 70 000. You must submit the claim within 3 months of the date of death. OUTsurance then asks for documents, and you must supply them within a further 3 months, at your own cost.

OUTsurance does not publish a document list. It requests what it needs, so ask when you phone. Have the policy number and the IDs ready.

The policy wording says that where a person has several OUTsurance funeral benefits, the most paid within 48 hours is R100,000, and the balance is paid after the claim is validated. OUTsurance's general claims page says it aims to pay valid claims within 48 hours of receiving all documents, but that page is written for all its products, not only funeral. The rules say an insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all documents.

If OUTsurance declines a claim

Ask for the reason in writing. The usual causes are a claim inside the waiting period, a late claim or unpaid premiums. An insurer may not refuse a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about.

If you are still unhappy, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free, and complaints can be dismissed after three years. See our guide to funeral cover scams and your rights.

Who it suits

OUTsurance suits people who are under 70, want to buy directly and want to set their own cover amount. The trade-offs are the short claim deadline, the fact that you cannot see a price without a quote, and that premiums rise 5% each year.

Compare with Discovery, 1Life and other providers before you decide.
