What 1Life offers
1Life sells one funeral plan, 1Life Funeral Cover, and it also sells life cover. 1Life Insurance Limited is the insurer, and 1Life is now part of the Clientèle group. The plan pays up to R50 000 for each family member, and one policy can cover up to 16 people.
The family limits are published:
- Spouses: up to 2.
- Children: up to 5, up to the age of 21.
- Extended family: 9 members, including 4 parents (up to the age of 75) or parents-in-law (up to the age of 65).
1Life does not state the age limit for the main member on the page we checked, so ask when you apply.

Benefits and what they are worth
1Life lists these included benefits: a R5 000 headstone benefit, a repatriation service for all policy members, a R6 000 grocery benefit if the main member dies, a premium waiver for up to 6 months, and a continuation option so the first spouse can take over the policy. Premiums are fixed for the first 12 months. The repatriation service covers moves from any SADC country to South Africa.
No cash back or premium payback is listed. Instead 1Life offers a free rewards programme.
The example premiums, R290, R320 and R383 a month, depend on the risk profile of the family. 1Life says buying online saves 40% on monthly premiums. Ask for a written quote for your own family, because your premium depends on who you add.
Waiting periods
Accidental death is covered as soon as you take out the policy and 1Life receives the first premium. For natural death 1Life asks for 6 completed months and 6 paid premiums. Both conditions must be met, so keep paying on time.
The law also says a funeral policy may not impose a waiting period longer than six months for natural death, and none may apply to accidental death. A new insurer may not impose a waiting period if you had a previous policy with another insurer at least 31 days earlier, covering similar risks and the same lives, and you had completed that waiting period. Tell 1Life about your old policy. You may also cancel a new policy within 31 days of receiving the policy information, if no benefit has been paid or claimed.
How to claim from 1Life
Upload the documents online, email [email protected], or phone 0860 10 51 96. A claims consultant responds to a submitted claim within 24 business hours. 1Life asks for:
- A certified copy of the death certificate.
- A notification of death form (DHA 1663), from funeral parlours or traditional leaders.
- A certified and valid identity document of the deceased.
- A certified and valid identity document of the beneficiary.
- A certified bank confirmation letter or 3 months of bank statements of the beneficiary.
If the death is unnatural, you also need a completed police report. A claims consultant sends you the form.
1Life says valid claims are paid into your bank account within 48 business hours of approval.
If 1Life declines your claim
ASISA, the industry body, says the main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums. Ask 1Life for the reason in writing. You can call its resolutions officer on 0860 10 54 31.
An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim for non-disclosure of information it did not specifically ask for before the policy started. If you are still not satisfied, take it to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. The service is free. You can lodge a complaint at nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/, call 0860 800 900, or email [email protected]. Trying 1Life first is sensible, but it is not a legal requirement. The Ombud can dismiss a complaint after three or more years.
Who 1Life suits
1Life suits families who want a single policy for a spouse, children and extended family, with published limits on who can be added and with cash benefits for a headstone and groceries. It suits people who are happy to buy online or by phone.
It suits you less if you want cash back on premiums, because none is listed. Compare a written quote with other providers on our compare funeral cover page, and see our Clientèle page, since both are now in the same group.
