RFA funeral cover here means RFA Funeral Services, sold by RFA (Pty) Ltd. It is not the Road Freight Association. RFA Funeral Services has four covers: R10,000 from R60 a month, R20,000 from R90, R30,000 from R120, and R10,000 for main members over 65 from R150 a month. The base premium covers the main member, a spouse and up to 6 children under 21.
The policies are underwritten by RMA Life and administered by Rand Mutual Admin. This page uses only what RFA publishes on its own website, checked on 30 September 2026. We are independent and do not sell cover, so confirm the details with RFA before you sign.
Which RFA this is, and who is behind it
Searching for "RFA funeral cover" can be confusing, because RFA also stands for the Road Freight Association. The Road Freight Association is a different organisation and has nothing to do with this policy. The RFA on this page is RFA Funeral Services.
RFA Funeral Services (RFA (Pty) Ltd) is an authorised financial services provider. Its policies are underwritten by RMA Life, a licensed life insurer, and administered by Rand Mutual Admin.
RFA describes itself as a funeral cover provider with branches in Limpopo and Gauteng, so it may suit families in those provinces who want to visit an office.

The covers, adding family and cover limits
The base premium for each cover includes the main member, a spouse and up to 6 children under 21. Cover 4 is for a main member who is over 65.
Parents, in-laws and grandparents can be added, up to 4 of them, and so can extended family. Their premiums are priced by age band and are listed under each plan in the table above. They rise steeply with age, so add up the full monthly cost before you decide. Up to 18 members can be covered on one policy.
RFA says cover is limited to R30 000 for the main member and R50 000 for a life assured under all policies. The plans on its site top out at R30,000, so ask RFA where the R50 000 limit applies to you. It also says a policy can replace existing cover from another provider.
For more on covering relatives, see funeral cover for extended family. If you or your parents are over 65, see funeral cover over 65.
Waiting periods, missed premiums and cooling-off
RFA's waiting periods are 6 calendar months for natural death and 12 calendar months for suicide. There is none for accidental death, provided the first premium has been received.
The law caps the waiting period for a natural death at six months and allows none for an accidental death, so these terms are within the rules. If you had a funeral policy with another insurer at least 31 days earlier, covering the same people, and you had finished that waiting period, a new insurer may not impose another. Ask RFA about this if you are replacing cover.
RFA gives a 30-day grace period for monthly premiums. The policy lapses if no premium is received for two months, and it can be reinstated within three months of lapsing. There is a 31-day cooling-off period. Keep proof of every payment.

Claim documents and payout time
RFA lists these documents for a funeral claim:
- A certified copy of the deceased's ID.
- A certified copy of the claimant's or beneficiary's ID.
- A certified copy of the computer-printed death certificate.
- A copy of all four pages of the DHA1663 or DHA1680 notification of death or stillbirth.
- Proof of the claimant's bank account.
- An accident report by an investigating officer, for accidental death.
Email the signed claim form to [email protected], or hand it in at a branch. RFA's FAQ says all valid claims are paid within 48 hours of receiving all the required documentation. Its contact page says that after you submit, it will review your information and be in touch within 24 to 48 hours, and that payout follows within the next 48 business hours. Those wordings differ, so ask RFA which applies when you submit.
The regulator's rule is that an insurer must decide a funeral claim within two business days after it has every required document. Our guide to how funeral cover payouts work explains the steps.
If an RFA claim is declined
Ask for the reason in writing. The main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums, according to the industry body ASISA. An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about before the policy started.
If you are not satisfied, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free for the person complaining. The Ombud may dismiss a complaint if three years or more have passed since you knew, or should have known, that you had cause to complain, so do not wait.
