How it is sold
Online, through the app, by SMS and by phone

Clientèle sells two funeral plans: the Funeral Dignity Plan from R370 a month and the Ultimate Dignity Plan from R435 a month. Both cover up to 13 people on one plan and pay between R30 000 and R100 000, depending on the plan. Clientèle says its plans pay out within 24 hours, and terms and conditions apply.

The main difference is the Ultimate Dignity Plan's premium payback benefit. This page compares the two plans, sets out the waiting periods and the documents a claim needs, and explains what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and we do not sell cover.

Funeral Dignity or Ultimate Dignity

Both plans include a R3 000 grocery benefit, a R2 000 unveiling benefit, R200 airtime when you claim and a 24-hour funeral helpline that offers grief counselling, help with repatriation of the body and discounted supplier rates.

The Ultimate Dignity Plan adds a R2 000 transport benefit and three children covered at no additional cost. Its premium payback benefit pays beneficiaries the full cover plus all premiums paid for the deceased member. The page also says half of premiums are paid back in cash at 65 if the policy is taken before age 50. This benefit has a six-month waiting period and excludes children.

The Funeral Dignity Plan has no premium payback, but it lists a double accidental death benefit for the main member. Ask Clientèle to show you the difference in monthly cost for your own family before you choose.

Clientèle says premiums escalate by 10% and benefits by 6% each year. Your premium will grow faster than your cover, so check that you can still afford it in later years.

Waiting periods and cover for children

Clientèle's 2021 product brochure says natural-death cover starts after six months, accidental death has immediate cover, and suicide is not covered within the first 12 months. The current product page only states a six-month waiting period for the premium payback benefit, so confirm the natural-death period in your policy schedule.

Cover for children is limited by law. The brochure gives the benefit payable as R2 500 below age 2, R5 000 from age 2 to 5, R10 000 from age 6 to 13, and 100% of the total funeral benefit from age 14 to 18, or to 21 if a full-time student. This applies whatever funeral benefit you select.

The law also says a funeral policy may not impose a waiting period longer than six months for natural death, and none may apply to accidental death. You may cancel a new policy within 31 days of receiving the policy information, if no benefit has been paid or claimed.

How to claim from Clientele

Call the head office and claims line on 011 320 3000, email [email protected], or use WhatsApp on 067 342 7248 for claims and encashment queries. You can also SMS your policy number to 31041 and Clientèle will call you back.

Clientèle asks for:

  • A copy of the Notice of Death or Stillbirth (DHA 1663) form.
  • A certified copy of the insured's identity document.
  • A certified copy of the beneficiary's identity document.
  • A certified copy of the death certificate.

For an unnatural death, add a police report completed by the Investigating Officer. Clientèle may ask for additional documents depending on the circumstances. It says all valid claims are paid within 24 hours, and terms and conditions apply.

If Clientele declines your claim

ASISA, the industry body, says the main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums. Ask Clientèle for the reason in writing and check it against your policy.

An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim for non-disclosure of information it did not specifically ask for before the policy started. If you disagree, take it to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. The service is free. You can lodge a complaint at nfosa.co.za/submit-a-complaint/, call 0860 800 900, or email [email protected]. Trying Clientèle first is sensible, but it is not a legal requirement. The Ombud can dismiss a complaint after three or more years.

Who Clientele suits

Clientèle suits families who want to buy without visiting a branch and who want one plan covering up to 13 people. The Ultimate Dignity Plan suits people who value getting premiums back, provided they can afford the higher premium.

It suits you less if you want a low-cost single policy, because published premiums start at R370 a month. Compare a written quote with other providers on our compare funeral cover page.
