Two Mountains funeral cover is a set of five burial plans (Tribute, African Pride, Copper, Silver and Gold) with service values from R15,000 to R50,000 and premiums from R99pm to R275pm. Two Mountains has been part of the Old Mutual group since 2023. The plans pay for a Two Mountains funeral service, and Two Mountains says it will pay a cash amount equal to your cover if circumstances require it.
This page explains what each plan includes, what is not published, how to claim and what to do if a claim is declined. We are independent and do not sell cover. Confirm the current terms with Two Mountains before you sign.
What Two Mountains offers
Two Mountains is a burial services and funeral cover group. Its plans are service plans. Each one gives you a funeral service with a casket, a hearse and other items, and the value of that service is what the plan is priced by. The higher plans add family cars, decor and more.
The plan pages state that the service value is for policyholders only, so ask how family members are covered before you sign. The Tribute plan is exclusively for SASSA clients.
Two Mountains says that if circumstances require it, it will pay a cash amount equal to your cover instead of the service. Ask how to request this, because you may not want to use Two Mountains for the funeral. Two Mountains has been part of the Old Mutual group since 2023. Policies are issued by Two Mountains Underwriters.

Waiting periods and when cover starts
Immediate accidental death cover begins once the first premium is paid. Cover increases carry a six month waiting period on the additional amount.
Two Mountains does not publish the waiting period for natural death on the pages we checked, and it does not publish entry ages or family size limits. Ask Two Mountains for these in writing before you buy. South African rules cap a funeral waiting period at six months and do not allow one for accidental death. Our page on funeral cover with no waiting period explains more.
Paying premiums and keeping cover active
You can pay by debit order, government stop order, SASSA grant deduction or card at branches. You can also pay at Pay@ points in Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Pep and spaza shops with Flash. Two Mountains says no minimum income is required.
Missing one premium leaves cover active but in arrears. Missing two premiums in a row makes the policy lapse, and Two Mountains will not honour claims on a lapsed policy. If money is tight, call before you miss a second payment.
How to claim
You can claim at a branch, on 0800 668 539, on WhatsApp on 082 385 2820, or by email to [email protected]. Customer care hours are 08h00 to 17h00 on weekdays and 08h00 to 13h00 on Saturdays. Pick-up and repatriation services run 24 hours a day.
Two Mountains asks for these documents:
- a certified copy of the death certificate
- a copy of the deceased's ID
- the claimant's ID
- a fully completed claim form
- the claimant's banking details
- all copies of the DHA or BI-1663 form from Home Affairs
Two Mountains may ask for more, depending on the claim. It does not publish a payout time, so ask how long it will take. The rules say an insurer must decide a funeral claim within 2 business days of receiving all documents.
If Two Mountains declines a claim
Ask for the reason in writing. The usual causes are a lapsed policy, a claim inside a waiting period or missing documents. An insurer may not refuse a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about.
If you are still unhappy, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free, and complaints can be dismissed after three years. See our guide to funeral cover scams and your rights.
Who it suits
Two Mountains suits a family that wants the funeral service arranged and paid for by one company, and that is happy to use Two Mountains for the burial. The Tribute plan is aimed at SASSA clients on a tight budget.
It is a poorer fit if you want to choose your own undertaker, so compare a cash policy such as AVBOB or Icebolethu. See how funeral cover payouts work for the difference.
