Vodacom funeral cover is a funeral policy from Vodacom Life Assurance Company (RF) Limited, administered by Smollan Financial Services. The main plan, also called VodaSure Funeral Cover, gives up to R50,000 of cover, and Vodacom says it starts from R64 a month. The main plan: cover limits, who can join and extras

Your cover, and the cover for a spouse, parents and extended family, cannot exceed R50 000. The owner, spouse and extended family join at 18 to 74. Children are covered at a share of your cover:

ChildCover
Younger than 650% of your cover, to a maximum of R20 000

Stillborn baby12.5% of your cover, up to R7 500

Children are covered to 21 if they are full-time tertiary students, and up to 6 children are covered at no extra cost.

Vodacom says cover starts from R64 a month, and a customer story on its site cites cover for 3 dependents for R99 a month. Your own premium depends on your cover and who you add, so get a quote.

The main plan lists these benefits: repatriation within South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique for the owner, spouse and 5 children; a R300 airtime benefit; a R3000 grocery benefit; and up to R1500 of overnight accommodation for next-of-kin to identify the body.

Optional extras are available from R10 a month: body repatriation, and a Funeral Support Package with a R3,000 grocery voucher, R300 airtime, help with government forms, 24/7 funeral planning and trauma counselling. Vodacom also lists a 30% discount for applying online and 40% through the VodaPay app. Premium and cover escalate by 5% every policy anniversary. You may opt out of the escalation once and cannot opt back in. A December premium holiday applies if you paid every premium from January to November.

The 4 You weekly plan and contract cover

Vodacom Funeral Cover 4 You and 4 You and Your Family are billed weekly to your Vodacom recharge account. The main person can choose R2500, R5000 or R10000 of cover. The family option adds cover for a partner and children. The main person and partner join at 18 to 60, and children are covered up to age 21. There is a 15-day grace period.

The waiting periods differ from the main plan: 3 months for natural causes and 24 months for suicide, with accidental death paid from the start. Ask Vodacom how the 24 months applies before you rely on it.

Some 24-month Vodacom contracts come with funeral cover. The amount depends on the contract, and Vodacom pays the premium as part of the deal. Vodacom says to call to confirm the amount, and no other terms are published for it. Ask for the cover terms in writing.

Waiting periods, lapsing and cooling-off

On the main plan the waiting period is six months for death from natural causes and twelve months for suicide. No waiting period applies to accidental death, or to children added within 3 months of their birth. Waiting periods already served with another FSCA-registered insurer can be waived, with proof of previous cover and cancellation within 31 days.

The law caps a natural death waiting period at six months and allows none for an accidental death.

Vodacom's terms give a 30-day cooling-off period. Ask Vodacom to confirm your cooling-off period in writing.

A lapsed policy can be reinstated within 60 days, but there is no cover between the lapse and the first successful premium after reinstatement. The regulator's rules say an insurer that reinstates a lapsed funeral policy must do so on at least the same terms, with no new waiting period. Keep proof of every payment.

Vodacom contact numbers and how to claim

How to claim and how long it takes

Call 082 178 00, exactly as Vodacom prints it, or email [email protected]. If the number does not connect, check it on Vodacom's funeral cover page or its help page before you try another one. Report the claim within 180 days of the event.

Vodacom lists these documents:

  • A fully completed claim form.
  • A certified copy of the South African death certificate.
  • A BI1663 form.
  • Certified copies of the deceased's ID and the beneficiary's ID.
  • A certified copy of a marriage certificate, or proof of marriage, if you are claiming for a spouse.
  • A certified copy of an unabridged birth certificate, if you are claiming for a child.
  • Proof of bank account.
  • A police report and post-mortem, if the death is an accidental death.

Vodacom's product page says successful claims are paid within 24 hours of submitting all required documents. Its terms say it will usually pay a valid claim within 48 hours of verifying all required claim documents. The terms are the safer figure to plan around. The regulator's rule is that an insurer must decide a funeral claim within two business days after it has every required document. Our guide to how funeral cover payouts work explains the steps.

If a Vodacom claim is declined

Ask for the reason in writing. The main reasons funeral claims are declined are waiting periods, fraud and unpaid premiums, according to the industry body ASISA. An insurer may not turn down a funeral claim because you did not disclose something it never asked about before the policy started.

Vodacom lists [email protected] for complaints. If you are still not satisfied, complain to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900 or at nfosa.co.za. It is free for the person complaining. Vodacom's terms also list the FAIS Ombud on 0860 324 766. An older Vodacom help page lists 0860 103 236 for the Long-Term Insurance Ombud, an office that is now part of the National Financial Ombud, so use 0860 800 900. The Ombud may dismiss a complaint if three years or more have passed since you knew, or should have known, that you had cause to complain, so do not wait.
