Kings and Queens Real Funeral Services is a funeral parlour with its head office in New Doornfontein, Johannesburg. It has branches in South Africa and Zimbabwe and offers local, national and international burials and repatriation. It also sells four funeral policies: Standard, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The policies carry a six month waiting period, and the price depends on the casket tier and where the burial will take place. The company's website does not name an insurer or an FSP number, so that is the first thing to ask about. We are independent and we do not sell cover. Confirm everything with the company.

The four policies explained

Kings and Queens sells Standard, Silver, Gold and Platinum policies. The plans table above shows the published premiums for each region of burial.

The website describes services, not Rand cover amounts. Every policy comes with basic mortuary services, a casket that depends on the level of cover, a grave marker and transport. Silver has a 1 tier casket, Gold a 3 tier casket and Platinum a dome casket. Local burials come with a hearse, and international repatriations come with a complimentary grocery.

Four things to check before you agree:

  • The joining fee. A joining fee of R250 to R500 applies on top of the monthly premium, depending on the tier.
  • Where the burial happens. The monthly premium changes with the region where you will bury, so choose the region carefully.
  • Who the premium covers. The website does not say whether the monthly premium covers one person or a family. Ask, and get the answer in writing.
  • The policy terms. The application forms on the website did not open when we checked, so we could not read the terms, entry ages or exclusions. Ask for the full policy wording before you pay.

The six month waiting period is stated on the site. South African rules allow a waiting period of up to six months for natural death, and none for an accident.

Who underwrites the policies

The company's website names no insurer and shows no FSP number. Policy applications go through an online form on easipol.co.za. That is an administration platform, so it does not tell you who carries the risk.

A parlour that sells funeral cover must itself be an authorised financial services provider, and a licensed insurer must carry the risk. Regulators have warned that some funeral parlours collect premiums without being authorised or licensed. Parlours that only provide funeral services do not need that authorisation.

Before you pay a joining fee or a premium:

  • Ask for the insurer's name and the company's FSP number in writing.
  • Search for the FSP on the FSCA's register of financial services providers. The FSCA's toll-free number is 0800 110 443.
  • Check that the insurer is on the Prudential Authority's list of licensed insurers.
  • Ask to see the full terms, including which law applies if there is a dispute.

Claims and complaints

The website does not publish a claims procedure, a list of claim documents or a payout time. Ask the company, in writing, what it needs when someone dies and how long it takes.

For the death itself, Home Affairs uses the notice of death form DHA-1663 when a doctor issues it. A family member, or a representative the family appoints, must give notice of the death within 72 hours.

The company publishes a complaints email address in the contact table above. If a claim is declined, ask for the reason in writing and the clause it relies on. South African rules say an insurer must decide a funeral claim within two business days of receiving every document it requires. If you cannot settle it, complain to the National Financial Ombud Scheme. It is free. Phone 0860 800 900, email [email protected] or use the form on nfosa.co.za.
